Terms

What you may do with Templeton Protect, what a Protect+ subscription is, and the honest limits of a tool that reads your machine.

Who you are dealing with

Templeton Protect is made by Templeton Technologies. Payments are handled by Paddle.com Market Ltd as merchant of record: Paddle is the seller for the transaction, issues your invoice, and handles VAT and sales tax. Their terms cover the payment itself; these terms cover the software.

The scanner is yours, under MIT

The scanning engine and command-line tool are open source under the MIT licence, and the source is at github.com/templetongroup/templeton-protect. Read it, run it, modify it, build on it, ship it in your own work — the MIT terms are the whole agreement for that part, and nothing on this page narrows them.

Protect+ is a subscription, not a sale

Protect+ — the menu bar presence, scheduled scans and the transcript watcher — is a commercial product. A subscription grants you a personal, non-transferable licence to run it while the subscription is current, on the Macs you use. It is licensed, not sold.

Please do not publish, resell or share your licence key. A key is a working subscription and a published one stops working for everybody it was issued to. Removing or bypassing the licence check, or distributing a build with it removed, is not permitted — the engine being open source does not extend to the paid layer.

Billing

Subscriptions renew automatically at the price shown when you subscribed, monthly or yearly, until you cancel. Paddle emails you before each renewal and you can cancel any time from the link in any receipt. Refunds are covered by our refund policy.

What the software does, and does not, promise

Protect finds specific, factual things: a byte pattern, a file mode, an answer from the system, a line in a git history. It is deliberately narrow, and being narrow it will miss things. A clean scan is not a statement that your Mac is secure. It means these particular checks found nothing, which is a smaller claim and the only one honestly available.

The software is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. To the extent the law allows, Templeton Technologies is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid in the twelve months before it. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, and if you are a consumer your statutory rights are unaffected.

Fixes change your machine

Protect is read-only until you press a button that says otherwise. When you do ask it to fix something, it acts on your own files — deleting a file, changing its permissions, or removing a key from a conversation log. Those changes are permanent and there is no copy kept. The app asks before every one of them, and you are responsible for the answer.

Your data

We do not collect it. There is no account, no telemetry, and no server holding your findings. The privacy page sets out the single network request the app makes.

Changes and ending

We may update these terms; the current version always lives at this address, and a material change will be announced in the release notes. You can stop using the software at any time. We may end a subscription for a serious breach of these terms — publishing a key, or distributing a modified build with the licence check removed — and would refund the unused period if we did.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, United States. If you are a consumer, you keep the protections of the law where you live.
